Archive
Thirdly, Elenchos Project incorporates a rich cultural archive that traces the history of Democracy from ancient times to the 20th century. The cultural archive's timeline provides texts, documents, as well as audio and video files. The entries concern the history of the development and the struggles for democracy, and they also cover the history of democratic reforms and institutions. Finally the user is provided with an index with biographical and bibliographical notes, on the key figures in the history of democracy, the philosophers and political theorists that argued for or against democracy, and their writings. Target Group Elenchos will be appropriate for use, first, by university and high-school students, to familiarise themselves with the arguments for the justification of democracy and the authority of the state. These provide the justificatory basis for the democratic institutions and the governmental policies of modern European states and have moulded the European democratic ethic. Secondly, it will be useful to philosophers of any speciality who are interested in the representation of philosophical arguments. The methodological results of Project Elenchus will be used to enhance the interactivity of the Archelogos Database for the study of the arguments in the database, and for teaching reasoning. Funding- Timetable Project Elenchos is funded by the EC under programme Raphael (act III.2). Project Elenchos started in October 1998, and it will be completed in April 2000. |
